Upper Int./ Advanced Listening Practice:
1. Instructions: Read question 1.1 and watch the video. The speaking may be quite fast for some, but try to watch and listen once for the main idea and the answer to the questions. Then study 1.2 vocabulary and listen a second time for the vocabulary in context. Finally answer the questions in part 2. You can discuss them with a friend or write about it and post it here:
Part 1
1.1 What is the difference between looking and seeing? Is there a difference? Watch the video and think about: What is the point of the gorilla experiment?
1.2 Study these vocabulary items and listen again for them in the video.
Vocabulary:
visual cognition – (n) the brain processing what we see
collaborator – (n) someone you work together with on a project or job
ferocious – (adj.)- very aggressive, brutal, violent
Phrases:
pass the ball – to throw a ball, usually back and forth to people in a sport.
pound my chest – to hit repeatedly with force.
field of view – the area available that can be seen by your eyes
I’m not trying to be subtle here – subtle means difficult to notice. The gorilla is being sarcastic.
to thump – to hit with a blunt object making a dull sound. e.g. Alex thumped his friend on the head for stepping on his foot.
intimidating – to make someone scared or afraid. e.g. Ferocious lions are less intimidating in the zoo than in the wild.
Watch the video a second time and then take the quiz.

3.
3.1 What do you think? Have you neglected to notice something that you should, e.g. while driving or using your phone?
3.2 We often want undivided attention from people when we speak. Can we still expect this in the modern age?
I loved this material. I’ll use it together with New English File upper-inter. There’s a great lesson about this experiment there and some nice perception quiz questions.
This is a fun one. Psycholgy is a favorite topic. I’ll have to check out NEF UI. Thanks
